Brace yourself for an exciting adventure this winter as the 2023 Beaver County Snow Shovel Riding Championship is here! Scheduled for Saturday, February 25th, this event is going to be a blast for everyone who loves the winter season. The championship takes place at the beautiful Old Economy Park, just off Route 989 in Economy Borough.
The best part about this event? Everyone is welcome to join, and there is no registration fee! The rules are simple – sit or lay on a shovel, push off from the starting line, and stay on the shovel while sliding down the 165-foot hill to the finish line. Each contestant gets two timed runs in their division (except for the modified division where only one run is conducted).
Excited to know what’s in store for the winners? Prizes will be awarded to the first and second place winners in seven categories, including Girls 10 and Under, Boys 10 and Under, Girls 17 and Under, Boys 17 and Under, Adults 18 and Over (Men’s & Women’s), Seniors 55 and Over, and the entertaining Modified Division. The Modified Division is an all-ages race that allows the use of other sledding devices as long as a full-sized, straight-edged shovel is touching the ground and attached. Prizes are given based on the fastest time.
To join the fun, head to the Maintenance Building, across from the Barn, at Old Economy Park for registration on Saturday, February 25th from 11 AM to 12 PM. Children under 13 must have a parent or guardian’s signed waiver for participation. You can download the waiver in advance and bring it with you, or sign it during registration. Practice runs are open until the start of the event, which begins at 12:30 PM.
The Recreation Department will determine the suitability of the course on Thursday, February 23rd. If the course is not deemed suitable due to lack of snow, the media will be informed by Thursday afternoon. To stay updated, call the Recreation Department at 724-770-2060 after 12 PM on Thursday or check Facebook by searching for Beaver County Ice Arena. In case the event is postponed, it will take place on the following Saturday, March 4th.
The Snow Shovel Riding Championship promises to be a day full of fun and laughter, with support from the Beaver County Board of Commissioners, the Department of Recreation and Tourism, the Department of Public Works, the County Sheriff, and volunteers. Get ready to hit the slopes and have a fantastic time at Old Economy Park this winter!
